Life of Promise Ministries
Our Team:
The Richmond Family
The calling clearly came from God in 2010, along with unanswered questions and impossible situations. But today Tom and Arlene and their family are missionaries to Guatemala. They are in the process of building Para Vida house, a crisis pregnancy center to help mothers and babies from the most impoverished areas of the country. On a short-term mission trip to Guatemala in 2008, they met a six month-old baby girl whose mother had died in childbirth. She was ill and malnourished due to conditions of extreme poverty in her mountain village. Tom and Arlene began the long process of adopting Gabriella, making many visits to spend time with her. During their time in Guatemala, the Lord directed them to buy land and begin building a mission to house women from the mountains who are in desperate need of medical care both during and after pregnancy. These are women like Gabby's mother, who might have survived complications after childbirth if she had the help she needed.
As believers, Arlene and her husband answered the call to spread the Gospel and show God's love to those who feel hopeless and forgotten due to generations of poverty and a lack of opportunity to provide for their children. As they developed Life of Promise Ministries and obtained non-profit status, the mission became a true family endeavor. Their daughter Alyson, who teaches 8th grade science in Philadelphia, works at the mission during school breaks. Their son Michael is a physician who also works at the mission when his schedule permits. In the meantime, God answered Tom and Arlene's prayer to adopt with a double blessing, as they brought home their daughter Mae from China in 2012. Tom has served as an elder at their home church, and Arlene has served as a client counselor at their local crisis pregnancy center in PA.
The Richmonds feel so blessed to be used by the Lord to save the lives of mothers and babies. This is not something they chose or planned for. They believe it's something only God can do, and their goal is to trust Him with all the unanswered questions and impossible situations. With all the uncertainties, the calling seemed strangely familiar and natural to them at the same time. That can only be the work of the Lord!
